FIRST teams young people with professionals, as mentors, to solve engineering problems. They offer programs for students K-12 including the FIRST Robotics Competition and the FIRST Vex Challenge that challenge teams to build robots and enter them in a series of competitions. TEACHERS:Ask the teachers in your school to volunteer and be the instructor for one enrichment program during the school year. These programs are free and can be just as entertaining and educational. English teachers can run a workshop on creative writing; History Teachers can organize a performance on a historical event; Art teachers can work with students to create a wall mural; Math teachers can plan an hour of fun math games; or ask teachers to organize a game show modeled after "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader.
FIRE SAFETY: Ask your local fire department to come to your school and talk about fire safety. A school parent may even be a firefighter and be able to volunteer to do this. Have the firefighters wear their gear and bring a fire truck along (if possible). Sometimes the fire departments have handouts or fire hats they can distribute to the kids. Cost: Free
POLICE VISIT: Ask your local police department to come to your school and talk about safety. Cost: Free
AUTHOR VISITS: Ask your local library for information on authors of children's books that may be willing to come read a story and encourage children to read and write books.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Contact your local historical society and ask them to speak about the history of your town/city or state. Cost: Varies from free to a few hundred dollars.
MUSIC: Have a musician come to the school and, in one week, teach the whole school songs and dances. On Friday, the entire school performs for the parents.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH COMMITTEE: Form a Community Outreach Committee at your school who's purpose is to teach the culture of giving which you want people to feel so they will give back to the school. Do this by coming up with needs in the community for the school to give to.
MARTIAL ARTS: Contact your local martial arts center and ask them to do a demonstration for the school. Martial Arts teaches self discipline, confidence, respect, fitness, relationship building, and self defense. The center should be willing to offer this demonstration at no charge as it will provide them with publicity and will likely result in student enrollment in their classes.
HEALTH & WELLNESS:
Ask a nurse, doctor, or well-known athlete to come to school and talk to the students about good nutrition. This can be the school nurse, a parent volunteer, a local pediatrician office, or a local athlete. Similarly, ask a dentist to come and speak about oral hygiene. The benefit to the pediatrician or dentist office is that they will have an opportunity to distribute their literature to the families.
